Senior Viticulturalist (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Handpicked Wines is an award-winning fine wine producer with a growing number of sustainably and organically managed vineyards in the Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Tasmania, and the Barossa Valley.

A rare opportunity has arisen for a Senior Viticulturalist to join our team in Australia.

We require a passionate, collaborative and focussed individual to manage and oversee all aspects of vineyard operations.

 

Based in Australia's Yarra Valley, this role will work closely with the Director of Winemaking and Viticulture to ensure the viticultural strategy is implemented. The position will focus on ensuring that the Handpicked Wines’ vineyards deliver organic fruit of the highest quality while using best-practice methodologies. The role will include planning and implementation of significant areas of new plantings and areas of vine replacement whilst managing operating and capital budgets.

 

Role responsibilities includes:

Oversight, guidance and mentoring of vineyard teams in their day-to-day operations.

Setting vineyard work programs to achieve target outcomes.

Technical accountability for phenology and vine health monitoring, crop estimates, pest & disease monitoring, irrigation monitoring & scheduling, maturity monitoring and harvest scheduling.

Liaison with external grape growers and buyers.

Oversight of manual and mechanical operations, such as spraying, trimming, undervine and mid-row management, pruning, trellis and irrigation repairs.

Implementation of preventative maintenance program for all plant and equipment, grounds and property.
Managing supplier payments, operational and capital budgets, procurement

Ensuring OH&S compliance, including creation and management of SOPs and other documentation for all operations, training of staff in safe work practices.

Short term (seasonal) planning – set targets for yield and quality in line with company requirements, manage fruit sales for excess production, manage contract growers as required.

Long term (strategic) planning – develop and implement plans for vineyard development and renewal to ensure that production meets company requirements and cost efficiencies, manage acquisition and/or development of additional vineyard areas to meet current and future requirements.

Management of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia memberships and organic certification.

Maintain all required records, including spray diaries, work programs, monitoring records, yield and maturity estimates, harvest data, soil and tissue tests.

 

Role requirements:

Tertiary qualifications in Viticulture or Horticulture.

Minimum ten years’ experience in vineyard management will be well regarded.

Good communication skills, both oral and written.

Ability to represent the company at relevant industry and business events as required.

Ability to work effectively in a team environment, mentor and develop others.

Motivated to be part of a relatively young, dynamic and fast-growing enterprise.

Current driver’s license.

RSA certificate and truck and/or heavy machinery licenses would be advantageous.

Experience in growing a range of both commercial and premium wine styles would be advantageous.
