Position Overview: The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) offers an exciting recruitment opportunity for a UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) Viticulture Area Advisor.
Purpose: The Viticulture Advisor will provide leadership on critical issues impacting the area's winegrape industries, including climate adaptation strategies, pest management practices, production efficiency, sustainability improvements, and labor-saving technological innovations. The Advisor will work closely with local growers, commodity and grower groups such as local winegrape grower associations, and Farm Bureaus. They will develop collaborative teams with other UC ANR academics, including UCCE Advisors and Specialists, to address priority issues for clientele and UC ANR.
Qualifications: A minimum of a master's degree in viticulture, horticulture, crop science, soil science, pest management, or a closely related field is required at the time of appointment Position Details: The advisor will support both experienced and entry-level grape growers on viticultural practices, pest and water management, and new technologies aimed at improving industry competitiveness and wine grape quality. Producers face mounting pressures from increased regulatory and environmental compliance requirements, as well as from cost competitiveness in an increasingly global marketplace. Secondary responsibilities include supporting other berry crop producers, like blueberries and cranberries; however, the program's major emphasis will be on wine grape production.
