Tasting Room Manager (Wine Jobs: Wine Retail & Sommelier)

Fox Run Vineyards is a family owned estate winery located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York.  We strive to provide tasting and wine club experiences that leave a lasting impression on every guest that visits our tasting room.  We are currently seeking a full-time Tasting Room Manager. Candidates must be professional, articulate, hard-working, strong leaders who can handle multi-tasking in a quick-paced environment.    

  • The Tasting Room Manager oversees day to day operations of the tasting room while demonstrating superior customer service and employee relations.  He/she directly supervises the tasting room staff while carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Fox Run’s policies and applicable laws.  Our visitor volume and high profile Tasting Room require an outgoing, well organized, self-motivated and disciplined individual who is focused on the customer’s experience.

Position Responsibilities

  • Ability to effectively oversee the day-to-day operations of our Tasting Room which includes sales reports, staff schedules, staff performance, tasting sheets,  inventory, wine supply orders, merchandise, greeting guests, assigning guest tours/tastings, hosting VIP, industry and wholesale tastings as needed, opening and closing procedures, glassware and all tools needed to provide a successful tasting experience.

  • Successful budget management

  • Provides motivation, leadership and personal support through coaching, guidance and staff development

  • Hire, train, schedule and supervise staff, ensuing their continued education and development and building a strong culture of great hospitality and respectful salesmanship.

  • Partners with wine educators, winemakers and production staff to ensure the Tasting Room staff receives the appropriate level of sales, product and general wine education and training

  • Maintain professional and timely communications with other winery staff to assure continuity and success of shared activities and responsibilities

  • Plan, execute and achieve retail sales forecasts through tasting room activities and events open to club members and the public.  Promote benefits of joining the Wine Club.

  • Lead specialty tours and tastings with an educational focus.

  • Work within the Tasting Room conducting tastings, answering phones, resolving guest complaints and assisting with reservations as needed.

  • Inventory management of wine, retail merchandise and tasting room supplies. 

  • Coordinate with the marketing staff to ensure company standards are followed in all signage and promotional materials.  Also work with marketing to develop campaigns directed at increased visitors and sales

  • Have a working knowledge of the POS system, be able to troubleshoot the server and computers

  • Assist with hospitality duties, such as consumer tastings, VIP tastings, and events.  Coordinate events with marketing staff and Café Manager

  • Oversee the safety and cleanliness of the Tasting Room and Café areas including exterior spaces.

  • Create décor and display to enhance image of the facility.

  • Attend monthly Seneca Lake Wine Trail meetings

  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

Professional Qualifications

2 or more years of prior relevant experience in a managerial role is required; candidates with tasting room retail, direct to consumer sales, restaurant or hotel experience will be strongly preferred.

  • Must be 21 years of age.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required. 

  • College degree in retail/business management or hospitality, or equivalent experience strongly preferred.

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including most Saturdays, some Sundays,  special events, holidays and occasional evenings.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel and Word) and POS systems and a thorough understanding of social media and how it can benefit the business.

  • Organized, self-motivated and able to operate autonomously and in teams.

  • Positive attitude, energetic personality and strong leadership abilities.

  • Strong work ethic.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • High level of organizational and time management skills

  • An understanding of generally accepted accounting principles

  • Professional demeanor and polished appearance

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to remain calm and focused under pressure.

  • Passion for wine and the Finger Lakes Wine Region and interest in expanding expertise.
