Winemaking Intern (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Contract

  Dutton-Goldfield Winery

  Santa Rosa, California

Dutton-Goldfield Winery is a partnership of grapegrower Steve Dutton and winemaker Dan Goldfield, focused on limited production bottlings of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay primarily from the Russian River Valley. We are a growing, fast-paced winery that believes in working hard and playing hard, and if anything is worth doing, it’s worth doing all in.

Additionally, Dutton-Goldfield offers custom crush services to a few select clients. This allows for greater exposure to varietals from around Sonoma County, and an opportunity to work with and be a part of a multitude of winemakers and styles.

Harvest Interns work closely with the winemaking team in carrying out a variety of hands-on winemaking tasks, including (but not limited to): grape sorting and processing, yeast inoculations, fermentation additions, punchdowns and pumpovers, juice racking, barrel filling, barrel stirring and topping. These daily tasks will be performed around a core of cleaning duties, preceded and followed by more cleaning. All harvest interns will receive training and certification in forklift operation.

Lab Interns, while still expected to do all of the tasks of a Harvest Intern, will spend about 80% of their time in the Lab. This work will include but not be limited to: sampling tanks and barrels, performing basic wet lab chemistry (pH, TA, brix, VA. FSO2), running enzymatic analysis (RS, MA, NH3, Amino Acids), and logging in all additive materials brought to the winery.

We are looking for people with a passion for wine and great enthusiasm for crafting wines of exceptional quality, candidates will ideally have prior harvest experience, but enthusiastic applicants without direct cellar experience are encouraged to apply. A successful applicant will have a can-do attitude, pristine attention to detail, ability to work well as part of a team or on one’s own, be prepared to get dirty and wet on a regular basis (the romance of winemaking), and possess a willingness to ask questions when directions are not crystal clear.

Applicants must be available to work the entire harvest season, from mid-August to mid-November, and should be prepared to work a variable schedule and extended hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays. Interns must be able to perform strenuous physical tasks, such as bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing stairs and ladders on a regular basis.

Our winery is located within 15 minutes’ drive of downtown Santa Rosa.
