Job Description 

The SVB Wine Division is an industry leader in financing both wineries and grape growers in California, Oregon and Washington.  The 35 employees in the Division represent the largest group of finance professionals who are exclusively focused on the wine industry. Over the past twenty four years, SVB has developed hundreds of relationships with premium wine companies and remains a well-respected advisor in the wine industry due to our deep focus on the industry and longstanding track record.  SVB maintains its focus on the industry with four Wine Division offices located in Napa County (St. Helena and Napa City), Sonoma County (Santa Rosa.) and the Pacific Northwest (Portland, OR). 

The Associate role is a developmental position for a career path as a commercial banker with full relationship and portfolio management responsibilities. Associates assist lending teams in the analysis and underwriting of credits by spreading and analyzing financial statements, assessing business strengths and risks, and preparing written deliverables. They prepare routine underwriting documents for credit, facilitate the booking process, and assure credit files comply with SVB policies and procedures. Associates work with Vice Presidents as well as contacting clients directly to resolve compliance related questions and inquiries. Additionally, they will review financial information, collateral and other assets to assess portfolio risk and profitability.  Associates receive dedicated and structured training from senior bankers, including underwriting, portfolio management, & sales strategy in addition to the wine industry specialization. 

Associate I 

  • JOB LEVEL: Assists in the credit underwriting process and portfolio management for clients. Conducts due diligence on potential clients via spreading and analyzing financial statements. Assists in loan documentation and booking processes. Works with variety of products and divisions within Bank. Assists relationship leads with client inquiries and contributes to team loan growth and profitability.
  • JOB COMPLEXITY: Able to handle a variety of routine credit underwriting and documentation requirements. Reviews client noncompliance, past due status, and processes loan advances for assigned accounts. Contacts client to resolve routine compliance related questions.
  • SUPERVISION: Works under direction of the Team Leader, Vice President(s) and Senior Associate(s).  

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Accurately spread financial statements, borrowing bases and perform other financial analyses.
  • Gather appropriate data from clients relative to all credit actions and operational issues.
  • Master functionality of underwriting tools, including:
  1. Moody’s Risk Analyst
  2. MS Excel, Word, CRM, and PowerPoint
  3. SVB Online, Tableau, Business Objects, and other enterprise software tools
  • Maintain credit files and monitor client compliance, bringing all out-of-compliance issues to attention of VP/Team Leader.
  • Adequately prepare basic Credit Action Requests (CAR’s), Variances, loan renewals and new client onboarding with minimal supervision.
  • Develop working knowledge of SVB products (merchant cards, corporate credit cards, foreign exchange, SVBeConnect, investment products, etc).
  • Facilitate loan booking process once approval is finalized and documents have been executed.
  • Begin developing knowledge of wine industry.  

Qualifications 

  • EXPERIENCE: 1-2 years of experience. Basic credit analysis and accounting skills.
  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Course work in accounting & finance preferred.
