Le Vigne Winery in Paso Robles, California is looking to fill a unique position for the 2020 summer and harvest season. The position will start in mid-May, continue through November at a minimum and be split into two parts; The first half will be lab tech during the busy bottling season and the second half will be a combined harvest lab tech and cellar intern. This is an excellent opportunity to gain diverse hands-on experience and work closely with the winemakers and enologist as an integral member of a small team.
Laboratory Job Responsibilities:
- Perform analysis on wine and juice including Bx, FS, TS, Alc, TA, pH, ML, RS and VA and notify the winemaking team of any unexpected results
- Use and troubleshoot lab instruments including pH meter, densitometer, spectrophotometer and ebulliometer.
- Enter completed work orders and analysis results into the winemaking database
- Process and analyze vineyard samples
- Monitor fermentations (brix, temp, sensory analysis)
- Confirm that legal bottling requirements are met both prior to and during bottling
Cellar Job Responsibilities:
- Perform harvest tasks including pump overs, punch downs, inoculations, chemical additions, racking, barrel downs, and cleaning and sanitizing
- Read, follow and complete written work orders
- Assist with winery events
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Minimum 1 year of laboratory experience. College-level chemistry is acceptable.
- Be available to work 6 days/week, weekends, overtime and holidays during the harvest season
- Ability to lift 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, repeatedly walk up and down stairs, climb a ladder, stand for extended periods of time and work in fluctuating temperatures
- Aptitude for learning computer programs and working with Microsoft Office Suite
- Work independently without supervision and as part of a team
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
- Passion and interest in the wine industry
Strongly Preferred Attributes:
- Currently enrolled in Enology, Viticulture, Chemistry or another related field
- Ability to speak and understand Spanish
- Forklift certification
