Position: Commonwealth Wine School Assistant Manager


Commonwealth Wine School, located in Cambridge, MA, provides educational wine classes and events to the beverage industry as well as the public. Our dynamic school is growing and seeks an Assistant Manager to execute the smooth day-to-day operations of the school under the supervision of the Manager and Director.  

This position is intended for someone with basic wine knowledge (WSET Level 2 or equivalent experience), is flexible doing a variety of tasks, and can communicate effectively and professionally with students, teachers, and clients in a fun, engaging, creative environment. 

The specific tasks vary day to day as needed, but will include the following:


Job Responsibilities:

  • Work effectively with the Manager on tasks related to the smooth day-to-day operations of the school

  • Provide administrative support to ensure efficient operation of the school, including answering phone and emails, database and website upkeep, and student communications

  • Be the professional, polite, and responsible “Face of the School” 

  • Be physically present at the school to receive deliveries and to assist students

  • Exhibit polite and professional communication via phone, e-mail, and face-to-face interactions

  • Coordinate shipping and receiving of materials via USPS and UPS and FedEx

  • Support the teacher team by performing tasks involving set-up and breakdown of classes, and technology trouble-shooting

  • Handle light physical labor such as carrying wine cases, constructing window displays, moving classroom furniture, and storing class materials such as glassware and bottles.

  • Provide information by answering questions and requests of walk-ins.

  • Maintain inventory supplies by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders.

  • Receive and organize inventory, including wine and educational materials

  • Create and package wine tasting sample kits for online classes

  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related duties as needed

Workweek Expectations

  • This full-time position includes a blend of weekdays, evenings, and occasional weekends.

  • There is flexibility in work days and hours. 

  • Vacations and time-off are encouraged, but should be scheduled well in advance to be compatible with other employees’ time off.

  • General computer skills: 

    • Comfort with Google Drive components (Sheets, Docs, Slides, etc), and Power Point

    • Comfort with or ability to learn general website management

    • Comfort with using general databases

    • Comfort communicating via email

  • Ability to Manage Processes and People

  • Organized

  • Ability to Pour Wine Professionally and Neatly

  • Problem Solving Abilities

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Undergraduate or equivalent education required

  • Wine knowledge of WSET Level 2 or equivalent experiential knowledge

  • Knowledge of appropriate software including Google Docs/Sheets (MS Office Equivalent), Adobe Acrobat, Google Apps, and Zoom

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience

  • Bonus: Target bonus to be negotiated.

    • Multiplier based on both personal and company performance. Expectation is that they are 1.0, but adjusted based on:

      • Personal performance

      • Company performance


  • Continuing education for CWS, and 80% of WSET and WSG courses, up to a maximum of $1200 per year.

  • Paid vacation time to be negotiated, including specific school vacation time.

  • Paid sick time in compliance with MA regulations
