Minimum Qualifications Qualifications for this position include a B.S. (with at least five years of industry experience), a Master’s, or a Ph. D. in a discipline directly related to Enology and Viticulture (e.g., Fermentation Science, Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Beverage Science, Engineering, etc.) and demonstrated wine production experience. A successful candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge of enology and viticulture and have the experience necessary to instruct courses in wine production, wine science, and viticulture. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Candidates are expected to provide instruction in support of the Fermentation Sciences Program and lead wine production activities with students and local wineries. The successful applicant will be expected to work with a diverse group of students and to foster a climate that values diversity. Salary will be commensurate with experience.

Description of the Department or Unit The A. R. Smith Department of Chemistry and Fermentation Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with eight different concentrations, including the American Chemical Society (ACS) Certified degree, Marketing and Business, Biochemistry, Environmental, Fermentation Sciences, Forensic Science, Individually Designed and Chemistry Secondary Education Licensure; a BA degree in Chemistry is also offered. The Department also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Fermentation Sciences, which includes a background in chemistry and biology as well as business, marketing and entrepreneurial principles. The department has 20 tenure-track faculty members and 185 undergraduate chemistry majors and 100 undergraduate fermentation sciences majors. Many of the chemistry and fermentation sciences majors conduct research and disseminate their results at national, regional and local professional meetings and in peer-reviewed publications. Appalachian State University is a member institution of the seventeen-campus University of North Carolina system. Located in Boone, North Carolina, the University has approximately 19,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields.
