Chef (Sommelier and Chef Jobs: Restaurants)

The Chef is responsible for the overall smooth, efficient operation of the kitchen while maintaining high culinary standards, creativity, and quality. He or she recruits, trains, and manages the kitchen staff in their daily activities and motivates the staff to strive for culinary excellence. In addition, the Chef manages the inventory of supplies, equipment, food purchasing, receiving, and budgets and maintains safe and sanitary conditions for quality food production and service. He or she ensures that all meals are prepared following planned menus that meet the dietary requirements for all residents.

The ideal candidate has formal culinary training and at least five years of experience in a high-volume kitchen with some management or supervisory responsibilities. Candidates must also have the business skills to manage the administrative, operational, and financial aspects of the kitchen. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong supervisory and management skills with high customer service expectations, and good computer skills are required. Experience in an assisted living or long-term care setting is a plus. 


  • Oversees the management and daily operations of the kitchen
  • Prepares menus and recipes and oversees production of food according to sanitation and quality standards
  • Prepares meals following established recipes ensuring they meet the dietary requirements of the residents and maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and food safety
  • Ensures that work areas are clean and that equipment, tools, and supplies are properly stored
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and all company policies
  • Manages and mentors staff, including recruiting/hiring/training of all employees, overseeing HR/payroll, managing issues of discipline/termination, ensuring ongoing training/education, etc.
  • Manages inventory and adheres to set budgets
  • Ensures that required documentation is complete and is in compliance with regulations and standards
  • Attends all staff meetings, trainings, and educational classes as required
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Three years of culinary training at a minimum; A.O.S/A.S Culinary Degree preferred
  • Five years of experience preferred
  • Experience in supervising and managing staff
  • Knowledge of FDA and USDA regulations regarding food practices and handling required
  • Current Safe Food Handler certificate a plus
  • Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, staffing, and scheduling
  • Strong leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem solving skills, including the ability to maintain composure under stress
  • Strong organization skills, able to multi-task, and can manage time to meet frequently changing deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient computer and internet skills
  • Able to bend, kneel, squat, stand, and lift heavy objects as needed
