Job Description: Cellar Master/Assistant Winemaker

 

Abacela is a small family owned and operated 10,000 case estate winery located in southern Oregon’s Umpqua Valley AVA. The winery specializes in production of ultra premium wines made from Tempranillo and Albariño as well as other varieties like Malbec, Grenache, Syrah, etc that also thrive in the estate vineyard microclimates.

 

This is a salaried, full time position under the supervision of the head winemaker. The successful applicant will be a highly motivated, hard-working individual with a positive attitude who works well with others.

 

Duties:

As a small winery the duties will include all aspects of winery work, from the cellar, including: topping, racking  punch-downs and pump-over’s, fruit sorting, crushing, fermentation, etc as well as facility and equipment maintenance plus data entry and the occasional winery errand.

 

Candidates with a sound technical background and who are skilled at organoleptic and tasting evaluations of ferments and wines will be favorably considered. The individual must be capable of performing and supervising basic enological laboratory procedures.

 

Preference will be given to the candidate who is competent with Excel, Word and similar computer software and who understands the necessity of complying with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and rules.

 

Candidates must be able to; work flexible hours in a fast-paced environment during harvest and or bottling that may include afterhours, week-ends and overtime. During crush the cellar master/assistant winemaker will work under the head-winemaker in directing winery personnel in receiving grapes and all other stages of wine production including management of fermentations and barreling operations. 

 

 

Candidates who can document a student/work history that includes, (1) taking the initiative, (2) working independently (3) professional decorum, (4) working effectively with coworkers, will be given favorable consideration.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in enology, viticulture or a closely related field 

     

  • Minimum of 1 year experience in winery operations such as crush pad processing and cellar maintenance is required and experience supervising production personnel is a plus.

     

  • A valid driver’s license, clean driving record and forklift experience.

     

  • Must possess excellent English oral and written communication skills; proficiency in Spanish will be considered a plus.

     

  • Physical ability to inspect all areas of the winery and lift up to 100 pounds
