Airfield Estates Winery is looking for our harvest enology intern for the 2017 vintage. Our lab interns will learn and work very closely with our Winemakers, Viticulturist and Vineyard Manger. Located in the heart of the Yakima Valley; our Estate Vineyard has over 830 acres of wine grapes and over 300 acres of Concord Grapes. Candidates must possess a strong passion for wine and the science that goes into winemaking. The work completed by our harvest intern is critical for our vineyards clients and the success of making Airfield wines a leading winery in the State of Washington.
Employment Duration: Mid-August to End of October (Season Dependent)
Position Overview: Assist the Winemaking team and Vineyard team during harvest with an emphasis on laboratory work and quality control.
Primary Duties
Vineyard maturity sampling and processing.
Perform laboratory analysis on juice and wine. These analysis include Brix, pH, TA, Malic acid, YAN, FSO2/ ethanol using a variety of analytical equipment.
Responsible for taking Daily Brix and Temps, sampling tanks and barrels.
Record and communicate accurate lab records.
Communicate and work with Winemakers and cellar crew to monitor fermentations, including cleaning, sampling and some additions.
Responsible for the overall cleanliness and organization of the lab.
Daily set-up and calibration of laboratory equipment.
Set-up various wine trials as requested by winemaking.
Prepare and standardize reagents.
Ensures all company policies and procedures are followed.
Other tasks as assigned by the Winemakers or Vineyard Management.
Requirements
Coursework in Viticulture and Enology strongly preferred, working toward BS or MS in V&E; or a completed degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology or enology is encouraged but not required.
Strong desire to work in the winemaking field producing world class wines.
Must be computer literate (Word, Excel) with excellent reasoning abilities, outstanding verbal communication skills and strong data management skills.
Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
Ability to understand and comply with all safety requirements.
Positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and willingness to work long hours.
Must be willing to work flexible hours including overtime and varying shifts and weekends, in various climate conditions.
Able to perform heavy physical work (lifting, bending, climbing, pulling, or squatting for long periods of time).
Pay Rate will be $12hr plus time and a half for overtime, the harvest enologist can expect to work 60-80 hours per week.
