Hanna Winery and Vineyards is a family owned and operated winery in Sonoma County, with estate vineyards in Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Moon Mountain. We grow and produce ten different varieties and bottle sixteen different blends. Our primary production facility is located in the Russian River Valley, to the west of Santa Rosa. POSITION SUMMARY: Hanna Winery is looking for an Enologist who is passionate about winemaking and willing to put in the hard work and dedication to make quality wines. The Enologist is responsible for monitoring quality from grape through bottling with an emphasis on accurate and reproducible results, and the ability to discern those that pose risks or are of high priority. The Hanna Enologist works closely with the winemakers to maximize quality and fine-tune blends.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILISTIES:
Field sample, prepare and analyze grape samples
Sample juices, fermenting musts and wines from crush equipment, tanks and barrels
Perform routine analyses to assure wine meets legal and quality requirements including pH, TA, VA, Brix, NTU, free and total SO2, Ethanol
Wine and Juice Microscopy
Yeast hydrations, inoculations and additions in the cellar
Support winemaking activities in cellar as needed
Reagent preparation & standardization
Fining agent preparation
Perform bench trials for blending, fining and additions
Prepare tastings and trials
Sensory Analysis
Bottling line QC
Maintain clear and accurate records of all data for grapes, juices and wines
Input wine/juice analysis into Winemaker’s Database, grape analysis into Excel
Maintain lab chemical and supplies inventory
Maintain an organized and clean working environment
Vineyard sampling for crop estimations
Vineyard sampling during harvest
Other duties as assigned by winemaker and Assistant winemaker
Office/lab factotum
SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:
High school graduate or GED required. Chemistry or Biology-related college degree preferred
Previous experience in a production lab or winery preferred
Interest in winemaking
Good math, science, and computation skills
Computer skills: Excel and Word required,
The ability to both recognize and reconcile anomalous data
Experience with winemaking recordkeeping programs, WMDB preferred
Must be energetic, highly organized, detail oriented, and able to multi-task
Ability to work efficiently, accurately, and safely, and manage priorities and workflow
Ability to work independently and communicate well
Ability to work as a team with all winery employees.
Ability to work flexible shifts and long hours during harvest
Required to possess a valid driver's license
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK CONDITIONS:
Work is repetitious in nature with a high demand for speed, accuracy and precision
Ability to lift up to 55 pounds
Ability to stand for long periods
Extensive walking, some climbing of ladders and stairs
Ability to work irregular shifts and long hours during grape harvest; up to six days a week
Work around various chemicals in lab and production areas
Exposure to machinery, forklifts and related production equipment
Ability to work outside during inclement or hot weather
Cellar skills, forklift experience and fluency in Spanish are desirable
