Assistant Winemaker – Operations (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

We are seeking an Assistant Winemaker to join our team. This is a Production oriented position in our bottling facility, with no duties related to grape harvest activities.  Under the general direction of the Winemaker, you are responsible for the coordination and oversight of all winemaking processes to ensure effective and efficient operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES:

•  Coordinate and review all activities involved in the daily operations of the wine cellar, including bulk wine receipt, blending, fining, filtrations, sanitation of cellar equipment and bottling line, on-time delivery of wine to the bottling line.
•  Prepare daily work plans and deliver to Cellar Supervisor
•  Coordinate with the Cellar Supervisor to manage cellar staff schedules and workflow.
•  Monitor quality of work; assure staff conforms to organizational policies and procedures and government regulations.
•  Maintain quality of bulk wine inventory.
•  Assist in maintaining records for all internal wine movements.
•  Assist in development of procedural and quality control manuals.
•  Assist in the preparation of short and long term production plans and bulk wine inventory requirements.
•  Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight of Cellar Supervisor; actively work to promote and recognize performance.
•  Responsible for understanding the ISO Quality Policy as well as the company HAACP requirements.
•  Provide requisite ISO training to cellar staff and as needed manage the processing of updating pertinent ISO SOP’s, documents and forms.
•  Coordinate bulk wine shipments as directed by winemaker, including preparation of bills of lading as needed.
•  Ensure that winemaking dry goods / ingredients inventory is maintained weekly and place orders as needed to prevent any “out of stock” situations. Includes writing PO’s and entering receipts.
•  Maintain a Qualified Applicator Certificate for the purchase and use of SO2 gas in the facility.
•  Keep abreast of wine industry trends including product development and quality evaluation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

•  Work is usually performed in a winery production warehouse or wine laboratory environment.
•  Requires standing for long periods of time.
•  Extensive computer and telephone usage.
•  Occasional lifting of 40 – 100 pounds.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

•  Bachelors Degree in Enology, Viticulture, Fermentation Science or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
•  2-3 years Production Winemaking experience.
•  1 year supervisory experience.
•  Management and knowledge of bottling production scheduling and process.
•  Strong analytical, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
•  Knowledge of Word Processing, Spreadsheet and email applications.
•  Must be organized and detail-oriented with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
