Job Summary

The Senior Wine Buyer for California Wines reports to the Company Founder and Vice President of Merchandising and joins other senior buyers assigned by country of origin.  In this leadership position, you will play a key role in developing and executing our merchandising strategy as we build out the world’s largest selection of wine.  Specifically, you will be responsible for managing our California wine assortment including curation, merchandising, pricing, negotiating costs, and managing winery and wholesaler relationships. 

Major Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Business ownership of category merchandising and channel presentation of product and promotions.
  • Responsible for product assortment, pricing and merchandising for wines originating in California’s vast wine growing regions.
  • Develop seasonal and long term growth strategies, tactics, and KPIs.
  • Oversee daily, weekly and monthly results; accountable for driving revenue and margin growth.
  • Execute benchmarking and measurement strategies to improve results; help build a culture of continuous improvement and constant testing.
  • Proactively communicate merchandising strategy and collaborate in executing plans with internal business partners including Marketing, Customer Service and Operations teams.
  • Ability to create a plan and clear action steps from vague problem definition.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple requests at once.
  • Other duties as needed.

Key Education and Work Experience Requirements 

The ideal candidate will possess a high level of general business acumen, strong analytical skills, ability to successfully manage simultaneous projects, and outstanding interpersonal skills.  This role will interface with many departments in the company, making it a great opportunity to learn many aspects of the business, and externally with our suppliers and partners for sourcing.  Your background should include:

  • Master of Wine (MW) required.
  • Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, or similar field.  MBA highly desirable.
  • Seven plus years of merchandising and product management experience.  Strong experience on a buying team preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, presentation and interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Strong business and merchandising acumen with the ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • Understanding of content management software and processes for sophisticated merchandising placements.
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, and related reporting tools
  • Familiarity with e-commerce platforms, technologies and back-end processes

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position located at our Corporate Headquarters in San Francisco, California’s Financial District.  Typical workdays are Monday - Friday; 8 hours a day during typical office hours of 7AM - 6PM PST. 

Essential Job functions

  • Must be physically and intellectually capable of operating a computer, printer, telephone, as well as other business equipment.  Also must be able to use a pen or pencil to write.
  • Must be able to speak English in a clear and understandable voice so that business may be conducted with individuals of a wide and varied range of education and capability.  This ability applies to the use of a pen or pencil regarding written communications as well.
  • Must be able to read with or without corrective lenses.
  • Physical demands will involve bending, stooping, lifting, grasping, pushing, pulling and otherwise moving objects weighing as much as 20 lbs.  This may occur several times in a day.
  • Must be able to work extended hours, days weekends and holidays if necessary.
  • Other requirements include mental alertness, orientation to detail, strong reasoning and leadership skills, and the ability to supervise and be a team player.
