Viticulturist (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Job Summary

  1.  Farming Technical Supervision: (40%)
  • Assist in the creation of the Farming Plan, including development, vine training, irrigation, fertilization, canopy management, harvest, etc.
  • Oversees technical performance of supervisors and crew leaders in daily operations.
  • Implement, monitor and maintains records of vineyard operations (irrigation, pest treatment, pruning/canopy management, harvest, etc.).
  • Assists in maturity sampling and picking scheduling
  • Assist vineyard team in performing yearly evaluations for staff.
  • Supervises maintenance of farming equipment

 

  1. Viticulturist: (20%)
  • Assist in scheduling pesticide and fertilizer applications and purchasing, in compliance with organic farming practices, including creation of work orders.
  • Schedules pruning, canopy management, fruit thinning, etc.
  • Schedules soil management (tillage, cover crop planting, etc.)
  • Implement farming machinery calibration protocols.
  • Collaborate with PCA on pest scouting and keeps and analyzes pest and fertility reports
  • Attend technical meetings and seminars

 

  1. Record Keeping: (20%)
  • Implements vineyard data collection such as phenology, shoot growth, leaf water potential, pest monitoring, berry quality parameters, etc
  • Creates and maintains vineyard block maps using GPS and GIS
  • Create post-harvest summary of tons per variety, tons per block, for Finance.
  • Maintain pesticides records and submit monthly Pesticide Use Reports (PUR) to County.
  • Keeps records of labor input for vineyard tasks (own staff and FLC)
  • Create, maintain and update vineyard blocks maps using geographical information systems

 

  1. Experiment Management: (10%)
  • Coordinates with winemaking staff implementation of vineyard experiments
  • Oversees daily tasks of vineyard interns
  • Serve as liaison between staff and research institutions such as UC Davis, CSU Fresno, USDA, UCCE, etc.
  • Participates in blending and experimental wine tastings.
  1. Safety Manager for Vineyard Operations (10%)
  • Working with HR, train and document all safety procedures including tractor safety, pesticide training, and personal safety procedures.
  • Maintain personal Pesticide Operators License.
  • Insure worker safety in spray environments.
  • Maintain all safety training and document

This job has direct supervisory responsibilities for the technical performance of vineyard workers and crew supervisors, as well as oversight of seasonal interns.

 

Job Requirements: (Please indicate the minimum required.)

 

Education/Experience: BS in Viticulture or Plant Science or Plant Pathology.    Viticulture and horticulture working experience. Must have experience with computer packages as Microsoft Office, GPS, GIS and File Maker Pro.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and outside weather conditions.  The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.  The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.  Employee works around dangerous, automatic machinery and tractors.

  • Able to complete in house certification training to operate a forklift and tractors.
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License and clean DMV record required (if applicable)
  • Pesticide Applicators Certificate or higher
  • English proficiency
  • Spanish skills preferred
  • Wine knowledge preferred
