(Wine Jobs:
Wine Retail & Sommelier)
Full Time
McLean,
Virginia
Chain Bridge Cellars in McLean, Virginia, is looking for a new full-time member of our team. This is a full-time, salaried, position that pays in the upper $40k range (+/- depending on experience). Also included: paid leave, health benefits, and a pretty compelling employee discount.
As a member of our team, you’ll:
- Schlepp cases around the store for storage, stocking, and local deliveries (that’s not the cool part)
- Master and accurately use our inventory/pricing/POS, online ordering, and website back-end systems plus Microsoft Office (that’s not the cool part either)
- Make customers feel glad they came into the store and confident they are leaving with all the wine, food, and accessories they want and need (getting better)
- Participate in vendor tastings and contribute to buying and assortment decisions (now that’s cool, right?)
- Manage our accessories and gift bag/box programs (yeah, well…)
- Run the tasting table during free Friday/Saturday tastings to provide customers with great information about the wines they are trying and help them realize how much they want to take them home (definitely cool)
- Develop and deliver wine classes as part of our One Sip At A Time and Spotlight series (live the glamorous life of a professional wine educator!)
This is NOT an entry-level position. In addition to broad and deep wine knowledge, any successful candidate needs to:
- Bring strong service and sales skills and the ability to engage and connect with customers of diverse backgrounds and levels of knowledge/interest in wine.
- Show talent for, and experience with, presenting wines and information about wine, regions, winemaking, producers, etc. to consumer groups – proven ability to actually develop/write presentations a plus
- Demonstrate strong skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and general comfort and understanding of IT/software in general (there’s a lot of computer work); a bit of HTML knowledge helpful. FYI, we’ll have you do a computer skills diagnostic as part of the interview process
- Convince us that you’ll be happy (or pretend well enough to be indistinguishable from happy) doing all the boring and/or hard physical work retail entails and can get along with our existing team.
If you’ve got a talent/drive for social media and want to do that for us, too, it’s a plus.
Unfortunately, we are not Metro/public transport accessible. Job requirements include having a valid driver’s license and clean driving record so you can do deliveries on our insurance and being able to lift/move/carry up and down stairs 40+ pound cases of wine multiple times per day. The store is open 7 days per week from 10am-7pm (11-6 on Sundays), so working a range of shifts throughout the week is required.
Your cover letter is an extremely important part of your submission – we have to sell by email, so your ability to sell us on you in your cover letter is part of the application.
