POSITION PURPOSE

Under General Supervision, the Winemaking Intern is responsible for providing technical and logistical support by performing duties such as monitoring fermentations, malolactic fermentations, and performing lab trials.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists with monitoring juice, primary fermentations, secondary fermentation temperatures and activities
  • Assists in small lot fermentations; utilizes small lot wine processing equipment
  • Aids in receiving fruit
  • Organizes ingredient inventory
  • Conducts Harvest related lab analysis
  • Prepares special ingredient additions
  • Samples and sets up for tastings, analysis and winemaking trials
  • Participates in daily fermenter tastings with winemaking staff

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Participates in Research and Development experiments to support quality improvements in both the vineyard and winery
  • Assist in managing and monitoring winemaking trials
  • Assists with weigh tag management and receiving analysis checks
  • May visit vineyard sites to monitor grape development
  • Supports processes, vineyard grape samples, and analysis
  • Coordinates ML inoculations and progress tracking

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s in Enology or a related science such as chemistry or biochemistry preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong reading, writing, communication, and mathematical skills
  • Solid winemaking theory, wine sensory, communication/presentation and organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure during harvest with many different people and departments

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Most activities take place in lab, office or winery environment
  • Must be able to work extended hours during the harvest season and rotating shifts throughout the year
  • In the lead up to harvest, some vineyard visits will be performed where the temperatures may reach 100F.
