Job Summary: The primary function of this position is to, at multiple winery locations, oversee Federal and CA Compliance, Government Affairs, Safety and Sustainability Programs.  This position is responsible for overseeing compliance processes and practices across the Company and adhering to all compliance legislation. This individual will oversee a team and provide daily guidance and leadership to drive company culture and empower leaders in the organization to carry out safe and compliant practices.

Supervisors and Leads are fundamentally responsible for ensuring safety in their own departments and to uphold the following safety standards:

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward safety.
  • Ensure work is performed in a safe manner and all safety rules, regulations and instructions comply.
  • Report and investigate workplace injuries in a timely manner; identifies ways to eliminate risk of reoccurrence; complete audits; conduct monthly safety meetings and trainings; maintain compliance with hazardous materials program; inform/train new employees on specific safety aspects and procedures with the department and location; participate in monthly management safety meetings. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities  

25% Compliance and Government Affairs:

  • Plans, organizes, and executes compliance programs under authority of federal, CA or local laws.
  • Ensures food safety compliance with government regulations (bioterrorism, etc.) and manages regulatory issues.
  • Oversees completion of TTB excise tax reports, monthly 702 filings, fictitious business names filings, Federal permits, California licensing, hospitality compliance, federal label approvals (COLA) and more.
  • Organize and maintain waste water, storm water compliance and water quality compliance.
  • Stay up to date on legislation regulating winemaking, sales and distribution at the federal, state and local levels.

25% Safety:

  • Positively lead the company safety culture.
  • Focus on improvement of company safety policies and involvement of managers and employees in the process.
  • Review monthly/quarterly analysis of incidents as it relates to location, type of incident and resolution.
  • Oversees completion of safety audits and training as required by local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  • Ensures Training resources are available to provide effective safety training. Evaluates and reports on the effectiveness of training when delivered.

25% Sustainability

  • Oversee current sustainability performance of winery facilities and provide continuous improvement recommendations in the following areas:
  • Water conservation.
  • Energy conservation – electrical & fossil fuel.
  • Renewable & Clean energy.
  • Electrical peak load shedding programs – Demand response.
  • Green building.
  • Water supply and treatment.
  • Wastewater recycling.
  • Waste reduction, reuse & recycling – solids, wastewaters, air emissions.
  • Will stay current on environmental and sustainability issues relevant to Federal, State, local regulation and Industry.
  • Will stay current on latest Sustainable technologies, best practices, incentive programs
  • Oversee processing of applications for energy efficiency rebates.
  • Assist with administrative work – completion of forms, self-assessments - needed to apply for, participate in third party sustainability programs such as, but not limited to, California Sustainable Wine Growers.
  • Maintain our current licensing required for Private label production. 

25% Supervision and Leadership

  • Demonstrates leadership and professionalism and serves as a role model in the development of a positive and progressive company culture that is conducive to maximizing safety, quality, productivity and efficiency, promoting open communication, teamwork and respect for others.
  • Continuously evaluates and documents employee performance and provides constructive feedback. Responsible for the writing of annual performance reviews and employee development through coaching, team building and partnering, and performance improvement plans for individuals where necessary.
  • Works with HR to ensure successful recruiting, orientation, training and development of new hires, and effective and appropriate use of the disciplinary process where needed.
  • Represent Company in groups/associations as appropriate and maintain up-to-date industry knowledge through trade publications, seminars, and industry symposiums.
  • Assist Department Managers in the development of SOPs.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and/or projects.
  • Prepare clear and concise reports, proposals, and written materials of a technical nature.
  • Interpret, explain and apply policies, laws and regulations.
  • Assist in the development and management of project budgets and expenditure.
  • Perform basic financial analysis.
  • Develop and implement program performance measures.
  • Conduct outreach and education with Winery departments. 

Supervisory Responsibilities: (4) This position will oversee a Safety Administrator, Senior Safety Development Leader, Sustainability Specialist and Compliance Associate. 

Job Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from four-year college or university; and five years related experience in wine, manufacturing, food and beverage, and/or agricultural industry.
  • Strong technical wine industry compliance background.
  • Strong administrative and people management skills, including teambuilding and leadership.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational planning, project management, negotiation, communication, collaboration, and leading through influence skills.
  • Computer skills with MS Office, Word, Excel, Power Point, Database, Ascentis and Big Foot. JDE.
  • Knowledge of Safety, hazardous materials, general Cal-OSHA standards and regulatory requirements preferred.
  • Other:
  • OSHA 511 certificate.
  • Requires a driver’s license.
  • Required to drive personal vehicle.
  • Driving record acceptable to company’s insurance carrier is required.
  • Storm Water Pollution and Prevention Program administration or training
  • Knowledge of State and Federal Tied House laws
  • Talent in identifying opportunities to build strategic relationships to help achieve business goals
  • Proven experience in delivering formal presentations that are effective and suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to communicate effectively with members of varying professions.
