Bottling Technician (On-Call) (Wine Jobs: Vineyards & Cellars )

Job Summary: Responsible for daily operations of bottling line equipment, while performing bottling tasks.  Tasks include: inspecting bottles, capsules, hand packaging cases, glass dumping, final package inspection, empty case handling and cleaning-up, operating case packer, capsule applicator/spinner, and case printer and sealer.  Perform other bottling department duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

ALL LEVELS:

  • Follows standard operating procedures in the performance of all bottling activities to ensure maximum productivity and wine quality objectives are achieved.
  • Adheres to all safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to, timely and accurate reporting of all work-related injuries and illnesses to the supervisor, promoting safety awareness to co-workers, advising the supervisor of any unsafe acts and conditions and wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Responsible for facilitating re-work/re-conditioning, general clean up and housekeeping of any assigned area(s).
  • Responsible for adhering to rest and meal periods.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

STAR I - CASE THROWER/STACKER:

  • Responsible for placing cases of glass on the conveyor belt and sustaining the line with boxes.
    • Line moves at approximately, 200+ bpm.
    • The cases of glass weigh approximately 20 lbs.
    • At times stacking cases will be required when full of wine, which weighs approximately 50 lbs.
  • Place cases on a conveyor belt, hand load boxed glass from pallet onto moving conveyor, or dump glass onto conveyor, confirm that glass/carton is correct, monitor uncasing unit.
  • Using a mechanical stamp, indicate the correct date/time for the glass production tag.
  • Pull the empty wood pallet off the rollers and place it on a stack, keeping them stacked straight, for easy removal of the forklift driver.
  • Separate the cardboard and plastic for recycling bins, placing in appropriate compactors when time permits or before going to breaks or meal periods.
  • Keep the line full of glass at all times.

STAR II – LABEL/CAPSULE INSPECTOR:

  • Inspection of labels to include looking for damage as well as making sure they are in spec.
  • Read and interpret spec sheets.
  • Measure the height of the front and back label as well as the margins and confirm they are within spec.
  • Visually monitor the capsule, checking for a smooth roll down, no creases, or crowning on the bottle top.
  • Follow specifications to ensure proper application and compliance of laser date/time code, fill level, label, capsule and cork.

STAR II – SPINNER/APPLICATOR INSPECTOR:

  • Inspection of capsules to make sure they are in spec while maintaining the supplies for this piece of equipment.
  • Responsible for filling the trays with capsules, while inspecting supplies for quality.
  • Familiarization with operating screen functions.
  • Visually monitor the capsule, checking for a smooth roll down, no creases, or crowning on the bottle top.
  • Manage process of reworking bottles including pulling off capsules and getting them back on the line.
  • Ability to troubleshoot the applicator/spinner and determine if a mechanical adjustment is needed.
  • Able to read English, to trouble shoot the computer panel. 

STAR II – CASE PACKER

  • Operate case packer following all safety procedures.
  • Using the control panel, bring boxes in and out of the case packer.
  • Ensure case flaps are oriented correctly for introduction to case packer.
  • Communicate with mechanics regarding any mechanical problem that needs attention.
  • Inspect full case for bottle fill and capsule application.
  • Clean machine at end of shift.
  • Able to perform above duties by lifting, bending, squatting, pivoting and climbing for up to 2-hour intervals. 

STAR II – CASE SEALER/CASE PRINTER

  • Operate case sealer and printer, following all safety procedures.
  • Ensure the flaps on the boxes are oriented correctly, before entering the sealer.
  • Marking sure the glue pattern is on the flap, not entering the case on a bottle.
  • Keeping the sealer full of glue.
  • Checking on the end panel that the information required, is correct and readable. 

Job Requirements

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  

  • Ability to follow all department safety, sanitation and production procedures.
  • Ability to perform quality work efficiently, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to clean assigned equipment to meet requirements.
  • Ability adhere to all department policies and written procedures for optimum department function.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow written and verbal instructions in English.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts and schedules, including weekends and overtime.
  • Ability to sit/stand for a minimum of 9 hours per day.
  • Ability to visually concentrate on rapidly moving bottles at rates of 20-200+ bpm for a minimum of 9 hours per day.
  • Ability to frequently stretch, reach, bend and pivot in order to perform this task.
  • Ability to empty cases of glass and dump on moving conveyor at a weight of 18 – 21 lbs. per box at a rate of 650 cases per hour for up to 30-minute intervals.
  • Ability to lift, carry and stack cases up to 50 lbs., while maintaining the production flow for up to 30- minute intervals.
  • Ability to climb ladders and use stairs.
  • Ability to frequently lift, squat, bend, and pivot for up to 2-hours intervals in order to perform job functions.
  • Ability to sweep/mop floor with a broom/mop and bend and sweep/squeeze debris into dustpan or bucket.
  • Ability to use proper safety equipment and follow all safety procedures.
  • Must be self-motivated, with a positive attitude
