Director, Market Management (Wine Jobs: Wine Retail & Sommelier)

The Director, Market Management is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction to drive overall profitability of the business unit. This role ensures the development and implementation of both supply chain and buying strategies to improve operating profit, topline sales, assortment, merchandise planning, pricing strategy, and ROI. The Director provides advice and analysis to the VP. The Director is accountable for the development of a high performance, customer centric Market Management team who are deeply involved with wine, beer and spirits buying and replenishment for stores in the Total Wine & More chain. A large part of this role will be focused on directing the buying responsibilities for a specific Market, but will also entail responsibilities targeted at project management, new business initiatives, special projects and process improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Team Leadership
    • Lead a team of 2-3 Market Managers and 9 supervisors, associates and specialists
    • Develop all members of the team including indirect reports
    • Leverage team effectively to manage current responsibilities and take on new challenges
  • Buying / Vendor Management
    • Drive the internal processes and identify improvement opportunities in how we work with external market level vendors chain wide
    • Identify opportunities to drive sales through promotional activity related to in store displays, retail reductions or advertising and working inter-departmentally to achieve results
    • Lead the charge for helping our stores be locally relevant, nimble and customer-centric in assortment, merchandising, pricing
    • Cost and Deal Analysis (ROI review parameters)
    • Promotional Material Management and Tracking (Coupons, IRCs, Displays)
    • Vendor Meeting Management
    • Develop and maintain vendor relationships and solve complex problems
    • Collaborate with other departments on cross functional projects
    • Develop a strong knowledge of the markets/states they are responsible for including competitive landscape, advertising and promotional trends and changes, new competitive threats, item retail levels etc.
  • Supply Chain
    • Resolution of escalated Vendor Service Issues
    • Respond to inquiries regarding supplier product availability and costs
    • Manage Cost File Maintenance for thousands of items on monthly basis
    • Manage Replenishment,  Ordering and PO placement
    • Monitor and manage store in stock rates and inventory levels
  • Project Based
    • Identify opportunities to cut costs, drive sales or increase Gross Margin. 
    • Develop and help execute the project plans to achieve these goals.  This would include:
      • Project Management
      • Process Improvement
      • Rollout and Execution
    • Representing department on large scale projects as a Subject Matter Expert
    • Cross Chain responsibility for one or more functional areas
    • Work with cross functional teams to achieve desired end result
  • Accounting
    • PO Payment Approval and Auditing
    • Payment Processing and dispute resolution

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Experience, Skills and Education:

  • 8-10 years’ in a Senior Manager/Director role in buying and/or supply chain retail industry
  • Experience in a high throughput, fast paced work environment
  • Senior Level Regional Experience in retail supply chain management or purchasing
  • Proven track record of developing process improvements 
  • Experience developing senior level/management
  • Success in leading change management
  • 4-year degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Supply Chain or related field 
  • Strategic thinking, dynamic, detail oriented, proactive and results oriented
  • Ability to work and communicate (verbally and in writing) effectively with peers and
    leadership at TW and our vendors to gain support for the execution of strategies and initiatives that support the Business Unit
  • A highly developed financial acumen, strong math skills and a clear commitment to financial
    accountability
  • Demonstrated leadership ability of direct and indirect reports and to build and maintain team
    morale/engagement
  • Willing and able to mentor, train, and develop associates within the direct work group and across the
    Business Unit in general
  • Strong Analytical skills with a thorough understanding of the business drivers
  • An effective project manager working within time constraints
  • Energy and passion for driving sales and mentality to drive low cost of acquisition (Deals, QDs) 
  • Ability to deal successfully with complexities of a rapidly expanding organization
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment and decision-making skills
  • Develop and Use Competitive intelligence 
  • Strong understanding of Industry, the key 
  • Players and their motivations
  • Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, prioritizing and analytical skills
  • Strong negotiation, high level problem solving and public speaking skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft applications with particular strength in Outlook, Word and Excel

Preferred Experience, Skills and Education:

  • Advanced degrees preferred
